Zakarpattia Oblast is Ukraine's westernmost region, lying beyond the Carpathian ridge; its centre is Uzhhorod. It was created in 1946. It is the only region bordering four countries at once: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. It is known for mountains, mineral springs and wine, and is home to Hungarian and Romanian communities. Hoverla, Ukraine's highest peak, stands on its border with Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
