Cairo is the capital of Egypt on the Nile and the largest urban area in the Arab world and Africa. Founded in 969 by the Fatimids, it has the pyramids of Giza on its outskirts, and historic Cairo with its mosques and citadel is a UNESCO site. The Arab League is headquartered here.
