Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho shared his thoughts after the defeat to Juventus (0:2) in the match of the 7th round of the group stage of the Champions League, revealing dissatisfaction with the team’s performance while dominating on the field.
“It’s practically impossible for Benfitz to continue to compete with Lisa as champions, “practical” does not mean “impossible”. Although it was truly impossible, our mentality lies in the fact that regardless of your goals, you can give everything that is in you. You want to play with the excellence of Benfica and give your best,” Mourinho said at the post-match press conference.
The coach is confident that the team created chances but was unable to implement them. " We know that Real is ahead of us, we know that we are ahead of Benfica with their divisions, but we will go to the end. We just need to score. Playing like we played, creating moments like we created, dominating like we dominated, looming with that humility like we were small... It’s our fault to forget about the rewind. If you don’t score, you open the doors in order to let them in, especially if you play against teams from the graves of such a level,” he added.
Mourinho also respected that the team was demonstrating a strong performance, otherwise they would not achieve victory without scoring goals..
" We reached another phase of the attack with great vigor, but in the remaining 20 meters it was very important to score goals. This is a good match for Benfica, I don’t have any doubts about what to say after a defeat, but to win, it’s necessary to score. It’s not enough to just play well – you need to reach and score,” the coach added, encouraging.
Ukrainian players from Benfica, Anatoly Trubin and Georgy Sudakov, were in the starting lineup: Trubin won the entire match, and Sudakov was replaced in the 69th round.
