Former Russian boxer Egor Mekhontsev made an absolutely ridiculous statement that he would not give Alexander Usik a chance now. The 41-year-old representative of the Russian Federation, who defeated the Ukrainian in the semi-finals of the 2009 World Championship with a score of 14:10, expressed a desire to fight our compatriot in the professional ring.
Mekhontsev said this in an interview with the talkSport portal. The Russian, who achieved nothing after leaving the amateurs and had his last fight in 2017, also accused Usik of simulations and inappropriate behavior during fights.
" I'm still sure I would have torn it. I'm 40 but I still think so. I can't walk around saying I'll do this or that - that's considered rude in our culture - but I have a lot of self-confidence. If anything happens, I'm ready anytime, anywhere.
When he boxed with me, he kept falling, as if I was hitting him below the belt, although I was hitting him in the body - and at the same time he was grabbing those places where you shouldn’t hit. I think it’s shameful, in our country it’s considered a low act,” Mekhontsev said..
Let us note that earlier this Russian absurdly criticized the compilers of the Boxing Scene portal rating for calling Usik the best boxer of the 21st century.
Mekhontsev spoke out in support of the war in Ukraine. On his page on the social network Instagram, he published a video about the propaganda campaign “For Peace”.
