When exercise is important quantity, not periodicity

Exercise for three hours in a row is just as useful as three times one hour, researchers at the Royal University of Ontario say, published their new discoveries in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.

Ian Janssen and Janine Clarke found that adults who had 150 minutes of physical activity divided into two stages within one week were in the same physical condition as those who practiced more often and for more than 150 minutes.

The data of 2,225 inhabitants of Canada were analyzed to detect the effect of the frequency of physical activity on the risks of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

"The results indicate that it does not matter how the total length of exercise is distributed. For example, if a person is not engaged from Monday to Friday, and then engaged on weekends, receives the same dividends in terms of health and well-being, as with daily classes of 20-25 minutes, "says Dr. Jansen.

"Participants in the study wore accelerometers on their wrists for a week, so that physicians could continuously measure their physical activity. Accelerometer is a small electric device the size of a matchbox, which every minute records the movement of a person.

Researchers shared participants who devoted physical exercises at least 150 minutes a week to two groups. One group with a high frequency - engaged at least five times a week, another group with a low frequency, one to four days a week.

It was found that the group with a low frequency of employment was no less healthy. Thus, physicians came to the conclusion about the importance of the total number of exercises, and not their permanence. "Adults should strive for the duration of a weekly exercise of 150 minutes, no matter what schedule of classes".

Norwegian researchers also believe that a week is enough and 12 minutes of intense physical activity. 4-minute bursts of activity three times a week raise the level of oxygen absorption, reduce the level of blood pressure and blood sugar.

"Regular exercise increases the body's perception of oxygen, but the optimal intensity and volume of exercises necessary to maximize benefits remain uncertain.

An increasing number of facts show that exercises of short duration, but of high intensity, can be most beneficial for health with little time expenditure ".

Meanwhile, a group from the University of Copenhagen in the journal American Journal of Physiology in August 2012 reported that for weight loss 30 minutes a day are as good as 60 minutes. "On average, a person engaged in half an hour a day takes off 3.6 kg for three months, while in studies with a duration of 1 hour, 2.7 kg are dumped".
