In Thailand, banned plastic bags in large stores

In Thailand, from January 1, 2020, large supermarkets refused to provide plastic bags to customers, reports NHK.

Innovations introduced in 70 chain stores, including Central, The Mall, TESCO Lotus, Big C. The Thai Retail Association intends to reduce the use of packaging plastic for customers by one third in a year.



During the year, Thai hypermarkets and small grocery stores spent up to 13.5 billion plastic bags. But the main source of plastic waste is market and fair trade, where up to 18 billion pieces are used annually..

Ecological campaign against plastic bags launched in Thailand in 2018-2019. Last year, a number of Southeast Asian countries developed a strategic program to combat plastic packaging.

Instead of plastic bags, Thai shops offer for shopping free paper or fabric bags worth 20 Thai baht (about 16 UAH).
