Over the past two years, more than a million Ukrainians went to work in Poland, Russia, the United States, the Czech Republic, Italy and Belarus.
This is discussed in a paper by Bloomberg on labor migration.
It is noted that more than half a million Ukrainians have left for Poland. In addition, 343 thousand preferred their country to Russia, 147 thousand went to Italy, and 122 thousand - to the Czech Republic. Also twenty thousand people left for the USA and Belarus.
The authors of the article noted three reasons why Ukrainians leave their homeland in search of employment: the protracted conflict in the east, the devaluation of the national currency and the persistent corruption in the state.
As an example, the situation is with Poland where the worker earns 3,500 zlotys ($ 1,046), while at home he can expect no more than 7,1 thousand hryvnia ($ 265).
Previously, Polish employers hired employees from Ukraine "with great experience and diplomas", now they are ready to take all in a row and pay them three times more than at home, quotes the publication of the Ukrainian Roman Pelekh, who is engaged in the employment of Ukrainian citizens in Europe.
According to him, Ukrainian workers helped overcome the shortage of labor in Warsaw and Prague after freedom of movement across Europe and higher wages prompted citizens of these countries to move massively to richer regions.
"Labor migration is one of the main problems for Ukraine today," said Deputy Head of the NBU Dmitry Sologub. "This can be a serious risk for both economic growth and price stability in the coming years".
In general, over the past two years, Ukraine has lost 7% of the working-age population, noted the authors.
According to the International Organization for Migration, about 12% of Ukrainians work abroad or plan to do so in the coming years.
"The long-term forecast is also disappointing: according to the UN, the population of Ukraine will decrease to 36.4 million from 44.2 million by 2050," the article concludes.
