In 2014, astronomers at the Palomar Transient Factory Observatory opened a new supernova star called iPTF14hls, and at first did not notice anything unusual in it. After some time, their colleagues from Las Cumbres recorded an increase in the brightness of the light following the recession, which seemed to them an extremely unusual phenomenon, writes the CNET website in reference to a study in the journal Nature.

Involved in the power of the observatory Keck, created on this occasion, a group of researchers found that the iPTF14hls - supernovae II class. Usually, with such explosions, the brightness is at a certain high level for several weeks, after which the star dies for six months.

Similar, scientists write, that iPTF14hls explodes again and again, and according to archival photos it was found out - the outbreak was noted back in 1954, and then it was repeated in 2014.

"To say for certain that this is the same star, we can not yet. But as supernovae - are extremely rare, and that the galaxy is quite small, we believe that this is one and the same star with a probability of 95-99%. But still it can be something completely different, "- says the head of the group Jair Arkadi.

Scientists believe that iPTF14hls was at least 50 times more massive than the Sun, and even much more - 150-250 of the mass of our luminary, that is, the hypernova.

According to very preliminary conclusions, it is the huge dimensions that can explain its nonstandard behavior, which astrophysicists called the signs of "an unstable supernova of a pulsating pair".

According to the theory, within such colossal stars antimatter can form, which instantly reacts with surrounding matter, which leads to flares, but does not destroy the luminary completely.

When fusion fusion in a large star, the outer shell falls in the direction of the nucleus, there is an explosion.
