Hollywood actor Sean Penn clearly demonstrated that he supports Ukraine not only in words, because on April 16 he arrived in Kyiv, refusing to personally receive the Oscar 2026 for Best Supporting Actor in the film “Battle after Battle”. The Ukrainians thanked the star for his unshakable position by presenting, instead of the famous golden figurine, a symbolic gift - a figurine made from the steel of a Ukrzaliznytsia carriage damaged as a result of Russian shelling. This present has become an analogue of the Oscar, because it resembles the image of a knight with a sword, just like the original prize. A video from a kind of “award ceremony” appeared on the official Instagram page of Ukrzaliznytsia..
" You're missing the Oscars, and you also gave the last statuette to the president.. That's why we made this award from a carriage damaged by the Russians. You said that the metal survived, so we engraved here a few words that are important to us,” said the chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Alexander Pertsovsky, before presenting the gift to the actor.
In the video you can see that as soon as Sean Penn saw the gift, he could not contain his wide smile.
He sincerely thanked for such an award with the words: “This is all a real treasure. Thank you" In his social networks, Pertsovsky showed the Ukrainian equivalent of the Oscar closer, which made it possible to examine that very symbolic inscription. The figurine is engraved: “This steel once carried millions of people away from war. Then a Russian rocket arrived. We did not melt it down into weapons, but reforged it as a token of gratitude to you. For your talent, for your courage to stand on the side of Ukraine"
