A monument to the writer Lesya Ukrainka was unveiled in Hungary on February 25. The event was dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the birth of the poetess, said the Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary Fedor Sandor on the air of “Suspilne”. Studio"
The monument was erected in the new square of the city of Godmezevasargey, located in the south of Hungary, near the border with Serbia. It became the tenth in the world dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka.
" By the way, Mrs. Ariadna, who is a direct relative of Lesya Ukrainka, came to this opening. She doesn’t know a single word in Ukrainian, she communicates in Hungarian,” the diplomat noted.

According to Sandor, all work was financed by the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary. He noted that the sculpture was made in Ukraine, and “all 100% of the work was done in Ukraine”.
“We decided that in every region where Ukrainians live, there should be a meeting place for the local community,” said Sandor.
During the opening, a Ukrainian bandura player performed; the mayor and local residents attended the event.. According to the ambassador, on March 8 they plan to hold a reading of poems by Taras Shevchenko and Lesya Ukrainka.

Sandor also said that the mayor opened a Ukrainian bookshelf and an exhibition about the Ukrainian-Russian war, supporting the Ukrainian community. According to him, the event took place in a “pleasant atmosphere” without any prohibitions.
The event occurred against the backdrop of another scandalous statement by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who called the armament and maintenance of the 800,000-strong army of the Ukrainian Armed Forces “extremely dangerous” for his country and Europe.
Instead of military support for Kyiv, the politician called on the Europeans to negotiate with Russia in order to artificially limit the number of Ukrainian and Russian troops and avoid a large-scale arms race.
Experts associate this escalation of anti-Ukrainian rhetoric with the start of the election campaign in Hungary, where Orban’s Fidesz party faces a real threat of losing. Read more about this in the article “From “Friendship” to an ultimatum. How Orban and Fico are putting pressure on Ukraine"
