Ukrainian photojournalist Evgeniy Maloletka published the book “The Siege of Mariupol”, which contains his photographs taken in the city during the first 20 days of the full-scale invasion. Some of the shots have become famous in the world, while others the reader will see for the first time in this publication. Reflective texts have been added to the photographs, reflecting on the experience of the documentarian, the war and its witnesses, Ukraїner reported on Instagram.
The story of the siege of Mariupol became world famous thanks to the journalists who remained in the city during the Russian invasion and documented the war crimes. Among them was Evgeniy Maloletka, whose work formed the basis of the Oscar-winning film “20 Days in Mariupol” directed by Mstislav Chernov.. In his new book, he talks about the responsibility of a documentarian and the meaning of each frame in war conditions.
" Maloletka covers the events that unfolded on the streets, in basements and hospitals, and raises questions about the ethics of war photography.

" This story, above all, talks about what it’s like to be at that moment when the city is surrounded and the enemy is looking for you, what it’s like to press the camera button when a father is crying over the body of his dead son, what it’s like to see the worst thing and not put the camera down,” says the description for the publication..

Evgeniy Maloletka has been working as a military photojournalist since 2014. He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, winner of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine and winner of World Press Photo in the Photo of the Year category for his footage from the Mariupol maternity hospital.
On the night of February 23-24, 2022, Maloletka, together with Mstislav Chernov and Vasilisa Stepanenko, went to Mariupol, feeling that it was there that decisive events would take place. A documentary team documented the destruction, the work of doctors and the lives of civilians in the city that the Russian army was trying to surround.

" This is very important to remind and not let people forget, because memory is very short. I know that people try to throw away negative memories, but this is our story and through loss and pain we must become stronger and move on,” concluded Maloletka.
