The ZN project is dedicated to life (or rather, survival) in the conditions of a full-scale invasion of Ukrainian museums, theaters, libraries, reserves. UA, created with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine (MKIP).

Part 3.

Theaters during the war.

Last spring, even militant optimists in the artistic community thought that theatrical life in Ukraine had stopped for a long time..

Most theaters, philharmonic societies, concert halls of the country reported a forced pause in work due to the introduction of martial law.

Many actors and actresses, singers, musicians, directors, conductors, composers joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and territorial defense, became volunteers.

Right on February 24, 2022, a new wave of de-Russification, de-imperialization began to rise: theaters got rid of the words “Russian”, the names of “great Russians” in their names. For example, the capital theater named after Lesya Ukrainka, the Nikolaevsky and Odessa theaters approved the change of their names..

On February 27, the National Union of Theater Workers published an emotional appeal to the theater community on its official Facebook page: “Language is also our weapon. Language is national policy. We have been loyal and accommodating for too long, too long taking into account the wishes and whims of those who refused to change or consciously remained adherents of the " And thus they left the grains of the “Russian world” in their land, in their culture, which, like baobabs on the planet of the Little Prince, could, when they germinate, destroy us... NO theater has ANY right to show performances in the language of the country that wants us.

All state theaters withdrew from the repertoire works of Russian origin and Russian-language performances.

Unmasking "

It is the pupils of the “great” Russian culture who rape, rob, and kill Ukrainian civilians. They are destroying, destroying the cultural heritage of the people of the neighboring state, to whom ten years ago they came to visit, with whom they did common, in particular theatrical, projects... What kind of “culture” of Russia in the context of everything that is happening in Ukraine now, can we even talk about?

According to the latest ICIP data, 23 theaters and philharmonic societies were affected. It is clear that the data on losses is incomplete, because almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of the territories of Kherson, Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions are still under temporary occupation, which makes it impossible to calculate the exact number of objects of the affected cultural infrastructure.

Particularly indicative are the fates of two Ukrainian theaters that were under temporary occupation.. Luhansk Music and Drama Theater became twice a migrant. In 2014, the theater was forced to leave Lugansk for Severodonetsk, and after February 24, 2022, the team, divided into two parts, found shelter in Drohobych and Dnipro. During the attack on Severodonetsk, the recently restored theater, where Ukrainian artists from all over the country came to perform with pleasure, was completely destroyed by the Rashists..

But the real symbol of the bestial cruelty of the Russians, their policy towards the Ukrainians was the drama theater in Mariupol, destroyed by an air bomb in March last year.. It was the deliberate destruction of the theater building by the Russian invaders, where at that time hundreds of adults and children were hiding, and in front of the theater on the ground in large letters in Russian it was written - "

The cynicism of this crime - and in a giant linen screen depicting the literary symbols of the aggressor country: Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy... A few months later, such a screen " But the invaders went even further, and at the end of 2022 they demolished the building, covering up the traces of crimes..

Ukrainian theater breaks stereotypes.

Les Kurbas wrote: " And our theaters write positive scripts, make up a good repertoire for the country. Ukrainians have already broken and continue to break many stereotypes during this great war, one of them is that when guns speak, the muses are silent..

The vast majority of theaters and philharmonic societies (national, regional, municipal and private), the total number of which reaches 150, restored work a month or two after a full-scale invasion. Some Ukrainian theaters, as soon as they came to their senses, realized that people really need spiritual support through art.. And they began to perform in the subway, in bomb shelters, formed mobile teams for the front line and hospitals.

Some of the theater groups did not stop work at all. As, for example, the Ivano-Frankivsk Theater named after. Ivan Franko, which became a powerful volunteer hub, shelter and remained just a theater.

The experience of the Kherson Regional Music and Drama Theater named after. Kulish, who continued his activities in the evacuation. Or the experience of the Nikolaev Academic Art Drama Theatre, which from the very beginning of the great war was under enemy shelling around the clock and, despite all the challenges of wartime, in August 2022 opened the anniversary, 100th theater season on the stage in shelter.

Or an example of a theater. Vasilko, the first of the theater groups in Odessa to restore work after a full-scale invasion.

And there are a lot of such examples of the indestructibility of our native teams, it’s impossible to list them all.

During the full-scale war in Ukraine, more than 50 premieres took place throughout the country.

Our theaters received the Opera Oscar for the first time — Opera Company of the year 2022. Two Ukrainian theaters — the Odessa Opera and the Lviv National Opera — presented the world premieres of the Ukrainian operas “Katerina” by composer Alexander Rodin and “Terrible Pomsta” by composer Yevgeny Stankovich in the fall of 2022. Thus, at the highest international level, Ukrainian theaters were noted for "

Major losses and challenges.

dozens of lives of Ukrainian artists: Pasha Li, Oksana Shvets, Oleksandr Shapoval, Rostyslav Yanchishen, Vadim Khlupyanets and others;

" At the same time, some theater groups have already replenished with talented actors who have moved from other regions.;

deprofessionalization, people are forced to look for other jobs in order to survive;

revision of the repertoire, its renewal, de-Russification and de-communization;

updating the list of professions, which for a long time does not correspond to today's functionality in the theater.

Concrete steps.

The State Agency of Ukraine for the Arts and Art Education constantly updates the list of organizations, institutions and foundations that provide grants for artists in Ukraine on an ongoing basis.

ICIP in August 2022 created a special account to raise funds for the restoration of destroyed cultural sites.
