In 1980, the Japanese Yunichi Yaoyi filmed a documentary about paranormal phenomena and among other things wanted to discuss this phenomenon with Stanley Kubrick. The director responded with an agreement, but the personal meeting did not take place: the interview was recorded by phone. Documentary did not come out in the end, but in 2016 eBay sold a cassette with video footage from the filming. Recently it turned out that she has a fragment of conversation with Stanley Kubrick, where the director explains the ending of his film "Space Odyssey: 2001" - the final of the picture allows a lot of interpretations and has been arguing for many years among spectators, writes Gizmodo.

"People are interested in the meaning of the last scene. Could you explain it? "- says Yaoi, referring to Kubrick. After a short pause, he replied: "I tried to avoid it all the time - ever since the film was released. All because when you voice your ideas out loud, they sound silly - you can feel them when they are shown on the screen. Nevertheless, I will try ».

"The idea was that a man is taken away by god-like creatures, which are pure energy and reason, they have no form," explains the director. - They put it in what can be called a zoo for people, and study it - in this room his whole life passes, but he does not feel the flow of time. And they chose this room, a very inaccurate copy of French architecture - purposely inaccurate. I suggested that they roughly understand that a person may seem beautiful, but they do not understand until the end.

This is similar to how we try to recreate for animals their habitat in the zoo, but we can not be sure that we are doing everything right ".

"In the end, as it happens in the myths of many cultures, it degenerates into something like a superman, a super-being. He goes back to earth, and we can only guess what will happen next. This technique is often used in mythology, this is what we have been trying to achieve, "Kubrik said..

Below is a fragment of the interview, a full one and a half hour version can be viewed on YouTube.
