Due to the trade war with the United States, China stopped the import of American gas. The last tanker with liquefied natural gas (LNG) of American production arrived in the country 10 weeks ago.

As reported by Financial Times, a LNG tanker with a carrying capacity of 69 thousand. tons arrived from Capsic Christ (Texas) to Fujian Province in the south of China on February 6. Since then, there have been no gas supply between the two countries, since on February 10, China introduced 15% of the duty on American LNG (later they were increased to 49%).

A similar scenario was observed in the past - during the first presidential cadence of Donald Trump, the supply of American liquefied gas to China also temporarily stopped. It lasted about a year.

Journalists admit that this can strengthen the cooperation of China with Russia, which is built on cheap yergosursu resources of the Russian Federation. In addition, changes can stall the expansion of the LNG Terminal network in the USA and Mexico-the project cost is billions of dollars.

" I do not think that the Chinese Importers of LNG will ever conclude a new contract for American LNG, ”says Gaza specialist at the Center for Global Energy Policy of the University of Columbia Ann-Sofo Corbo.

It is worth noting that the United States occupies a not very large share in the Chinese gas market. And after a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation to Ukraine, it decreased even more-from 11% in 2021 to 6% in 2024.

However, some Chinese companies, including Petrochina and Sinopec, signed 13 long -term contracts for shipping LNG from terminals in the United States until 2049. This was necessary to launch large LNG projects in the United States. According to Corbo, recently developers tried to reconsider the conditions taking into account growing inflation and expenses associated with US duties.

" Now we are observing lower economic growth, and we think that the Chinese can withstand the loss of these cargo for a long time, ”Kpler analyst Jillian Bokkar explained.
