The share of non-performing loans (NPL) in the banking sector increased by 0.5% over the month - from 38.8% as of April 1 to 39.3% as of May 1. This was reported by the press service of the NBU.

The volume of non-performing loans in April increased by 1.2 billion. UAH. At the same time, the total loan portfolio of banks decreased by UAH 11.1 billion.

The amount of non-performing loans is 435.3 billion. UAH. The majority - UAH 326 billion - falls on banks with a state stake.

In PrivatBank, the amount of NPL is 178.7 billion. UAH.

As the bankers explain, the increase in the share of non-performing loans is slow. For example, in the first quarter, growth was less than 1% compared to the previous quarter..

This is due to the fact that banks are reluctant to admit the existence of problem loans..

Prior to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the share of non-performing loans in Ukrainian banks has been steadily declining since 2018 - from 55% to 27% as of March 1, 2022, while the loan portfolio has been increasing.
