Thousands of tourists arrive in Berlin starting from the first days of April, who had previously booked rooms in hotels and hostels. Therefore, refugees are forced to vacate their places of temporary residence.
However, local authorities have found a solution. A certain number of Ukrainians will be relocated to the premises of the former Tegel Airport, in the terminals and tents of which there are already beds. In total, the center is designed to receive 4,800 refugees.
According to TV Channel 24, 962 refugees now live in hotels and hostels, of which 722 are Ukrainians.. Every day, 70 refugees arrive in the German capital, more than 2,000 people a month. At the same time, the Berlin authorities say they will not be able to open more permanent facilities until the end of May..
The situation is complicated by the fact that contracts with six hostels in Berlin expired at the end of March, from which 650 refugees had to leave.. At the same time, some independently found a new place of residence, others were moved to other housing, and another 480 people had to move to Tegel.
The biggest difficulty was to relocate people with special needs, in particular refugees in wheelchairs, those who require constant care, such as cancer patients, people with injuries. Since January, 24 refugees have needed special care at Tegel Airport.
