The Fields Prize laureate was stolen from the medal shortly after being awarded in Rio de Janeiro. This is reported by the Brazilian newspaper Globo.

40-year-old Kurdish mathematician Kausher Birkar lost a gold medal worth 4.1 thousand dollars in half an hour after the award ceremony.

Organizers transferred data from CCTV cameras to law enforcement agencies. As the newspaper notes, the police have already managed to establish the identity of the kidnapper, but the medal has not yet been found.

The Fields Prize is an international award and a medal, which are awarded every four years at the International Mathematical Congress to young mathematicians under 40. It is considered an analogue of the Nobel Prize, which is not awarded to mathematicians. The medal is made of 14-carat gold of 583-th test. The award is named after the Canadian mathematician John Fields, who in 1924 offered to reward two scientists with a gold medal in recognition of their outstanding merits.
