In Chernivtsi, during a forensic examination of the body of a Ukrainian soldier transferred from Russia as part of an exchange, experts found an unexploded grenade. The ammunition ended up under the skin in the thigh area and did not detonate.

Due to the threat of an explosion, staff were evacuated from the morgue and pyrotechnicians were called.. The head of the institution, Viktor Bachinsky, spoke about the incident in an interview for Suspilny.

A dangerous find was discovered during an autopsy. The expert had already examined the cranial and thoracic cavities, and when he began opening the limb, he found an unexploded grenade under the skin.

The ammunition entered the body through the abdominal cavity, passed through it and stopped under the right thigh without exploding. After this, the morgue workers were immediately evacuated, and explosives experts were called to safely remove the device..

The grenade was taken to a special training ground and rendered harmless by detonation.. “If it had not been discovered in time, the ammunition could have detonated directly in the morgue,” says Bachinsky. While working with repatriated bodies, explosive objects are sometimes found - usually in clothing pockets. However, the case where a grenade was found directly inside the body of the deceased was the first.

Due to such risks, before the forensic medical examination begins, the body must be checked by pyrotechnicians and other specialists. Only after this are forensic experts allowed to work.

Since the beginning of the year, Chernivtsi has already received about 500 bodies of the dead, transferred as part of exchanges with Russia. Some of them have not yet been identified, and the identification process can last for months due to the complex condition of the remains.
