According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Latvia Richardis Kozlovskis, this decision was not spontaneous. In an interview with the “morning panorama” of Latvian television, he said that border guards and internal services analyzed the situation for some time. Kozlovskis noted that on the morning of March 18, almost all departments agreed on a draft decision. Therefore, the minister believes, there should be no obstacles to its approval.

According to the prepared project, the corresponding border points can be closed for pedestrians and cyclists since March 19.

With regard to how long they remain closed, Kozlovskis did not express the optimisman book that the situation could change in the near future. According to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, traffic through these points can stop for half a year, or even longer.
