The undersea fiber optic cable of the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) was damaged on Sunday morning, LSM said in a publication. The monitoring system recorded interruptions in data transfer on the Ventspils -Gotland section. LVRTC continues to provide data services using other routes. However, a slowdown in speed is possible, although basically this does not affect the end users in Latvia. Together with partners, LVRTC conducted an audit and measurements in the network of equipment installed in Ventspils. " LVRTC informed responsible departments about the event. Considering that the cable lies at a depth of more than 50 meters, the specific type of damage can only be determined after the start of repair work.

In connection with this accident, Prime Minister Evika Silina convened the responsible ministers and heads of services. " Let us remind you that since 2023, ten cables have already been damaged in the Baltic Sea, which affected Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Lithuania. In at least two incidents, ships were recorded dragging an anchor along the bottom, damaging submarine cables..
