The Czech Republic will no longer grant citizenship to Russians who have not renounced the passport of the aggressor state. This is stated in the Lex Ukrajina law, which on January 22 the Czech Senate submitted for signature to President Petr Pavel.

One of the amendments to this law introduces a ban on granting Czech citizenship to Russian citizens who have not renounced the aggressor’s passport. The President will probably sign it on January 29, reports Seznam Zpravy.

The Lex Ukraine law concerns the extension of temporary protection of Ukrainians in the country for another year. But one of the amendments provides for a ban on issuing citizenship to people who have a Russian passport.

The Senate was unable to pass the law, but 52 of the 73 legislators who did not support the document did not make their own amendments. According to this law, it is actually considered approved, so it was signed by the president.

Senators were not satisfied with three amendments that concerned criminal liability for activities in favor of a foreign state, the provision of Czech citizenship to Russians only if they renounce Russian citizenship, and the ability of school directors to announce a later date for the enrollment of Ukrainian children in the first three grades.. These amendments were proposed to be removed from the law.

At the same time, the authors of the law note that the complication of obtaining a passport of a European Union country for Russians is justified, since the Russian Federation has been waging a war against Ukraine for three years.

In addition, among the Russian diaspora in the Czech Republic there are many supporters of the Kremlin and people associated with the intelligence services of the aggressor state.

The adopted amendments to the law provide that all current applications for Czech citizenship from Russians over the age of 15 will be terminated until the expiration of the Lex Ukrajina law, and in the new version it is unlimited. The amendment will not apply only to refugees, children under 15 years of age, as well as those who have made a special contribution to the economy or culture of the Czech Republic.
