The new Secretary of State of the United States of America Marco Rubio, despite all his statements regarding Ukraine, will pursue the policy of President Donald Trump. His personal position, if there is one, can be ignored.

“At the beginning of his career he was a centrist, he even collaborated with the Democrats. In 2016, he was nominated for the post of candidate for US President, and during the primaries he and Donald Trump did not find words for each other. Rubio supported Ukraine at the beginning of a large-scale invasion and called Putin a murderer,” noted Alexander Leonov.

The expert also recalled that Rubio at the beginning of 2024 voted against $61 billion in aid to Ukraine.

“By and large, the position regarding Ukraine and Rubio, and Ukraine special envoy Keith Kellogg, and Vice President Jay Vance will be determined by Trump himself. And Mark Rubio himself is a hawk towards Iran, China and, obviously, has no sentimentality towards Russia (as, by the way, does Keith Kellogg). Therefore, at a minimum, he will not try to do well for the Russians,” Mr. Leonov assured.

He believes that Rubio will adhere to the position that the conflict should be frozen and the return of our territories should occur through diplomatic means. However, the specialist emphasizes that Trump, who will determine this position, does not yet have his own opinion about all the details of such a way to end the war. “And these are quite important questions regarding the provision of security guarantees to Ukraine, including weapons, and so on.

It seems to me that there may be positive changes here, because on the one hand Donald Trump himself said that the Ukrainian army needs to be strengthened, and on the other. the parties will perceive quite positively the issue of, for example, the deployment of military contingents from European countries in Ukraine. Both Rubio and Trump will contribute to this development of events,” Leonov believes.

Rubio also said that in the end each of the warring parties will be forced to make concessions.. He argued that neither Russia nor Ukraine can achieve maximalist goals in this conflict.
