President-elect of the United States Donald Trump explained why, in his opinion, America should establish a protectorate (in one form or another) over Greenland. This, he said, is necessary for “international security.”.
The American President spoke about this during a press conference in the Oval Office.. As Politico notes, Donald Trump cited threats from Russia and China.
In particular, Trump said that Denmark is not able to “hold” Greenland due to a lack of funds.
" We need it for international security. And I’m sure that Denmark will do this - they need a lot of money to support and hold Greenland,” said the American president.
Trump corrected himself, saying that “it’s not the United States that needs Greenland, it’s needed for international security.”.
“You have Russian boats everywhere, Chinese ships everywhere - warships - and Denmark cannot contain it,” he said..
The American did not explain how the United States will be able to “contain” the Russian Federation and China in the Greenland region, where the United States has long had a military base..
" We had representatives and my son there two weeks ago. And they like us. So we’ll see what happens next,” the American president promised..
As the publication notes, Trump did not mention Greenland in his inaugural speech, although he repeated his promise to return the Panama Canal.
