US President Donald Trump recognizes that Ukraine needs help to end the war started by Russia. He and his administration understand that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will insist on his demands in every possible way, but they are determined to end the war in our country.
This opinion was expressed by the former special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine Kurt Volker. He said this during the discussion panel “Combination of interests: the USA, Ukraine and the path to a just and sustainable world” at the Ukrainian House in Davos, Ukrinform reports..
“Trump takes office as president, and he is determined to end the war in Ukraine.. I think that he and the security adviser know that Ukraine wants peace, and Russia does not allow this peace to come,” Volker said.
According to him, the new team in the White House knows well that Putin will not be a respectable negotiator and is not in the mood for negotiations at all. The diplomat emphasized that the Russian side in the negotiations focuses on issues that are not really relevant or that do not directly concern it.
This is, for example, Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Regarding such issues, Volker advises the Trump team not to negotiate with the Russian Federation. You need to talk to Moscow specifically about ending the war, insist on stopping hostilities, and only after that sit down at the negotiating table.
“They should not determine Ukraine’s membership in NATO, with it (with Moscow – Ed.
) there is no need to talk about this at all. Instead, we need to convince Putin that the United States has the will and ability to ensure that he does not win, and that he will not achieve the kind of victory that he strives for,” Volker emphasized, calling on the new US administration to formulate simple expectations in relation to Russia.
At the same time, the new American president did not directly mention Ukraine in his speech. We've compiled the highlights of Trump's inauguration speech..
