NATO prepares to deploy AWACS reconnaissance aircraft in Romania. The planes are scheduled to arrive on January 17, 2023, they will support the strengthened presence of the Alliance in the region and monitor Russian military activity. This was reported by the press service of NATO.

“As Russia's illegal war against Ukraine continues to threaten peace and security in Europe, there should be no doubt about NATO's determination to defend every inch of Alliance territory.. Our AWACS aircraft are capable of detecting other aircraft hundreds of kilometers away, making them a key element of NATO's deterrent and defense capabilities,” said NATO Representative Oana Lungescu..

In response to Russia's war against Ukraine, the Alliance has increased its air presence in eastern Europe with additional fighters, surveillance aircraft and tankers.. Since February 2022, NATO AWACS aircraft have been carrying out regular patrols over Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region in order to track Russian military aircraft near the borders of the countries of the Alliance.

In the coming days, NATO AWACS will start reconnaissance flights exclusively over the territory of the Alliance. The mission will last several weeks.. About 180 troops will be deployed to support the mission at the Romanian Air Force base near Bucharest.
