Deputies of The Hague City Council supported the initiative of the leader of the VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy) Lotte van Basten Batenburg to create a special tribunal regarding Russia in the city, Ukrinform reports citing Ms Batenburg..

According to her, she purposefully worked to create a special tribunal in the city that would consider the crimes of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, since the International Criminal Court is already located in The Hague and special tribunals were held for Rwanda and Yugoslavia.

“We have the experience and international legal infrastructure to host a future special tribunal for Ukraine that will investigate and prosecute the crimes and atrocities committed in this aggressive Russian war,” said Lotte van Basten Batenburg.

According to her, almost all representatives of the City Council supported her proposal to make efforts to host this special tribunal in The Hague..

“Most likely, it will take a long time to create enough international support for the creation of the tribunal, and then for the tribunal to begin its work. The City of The Hague should fully support this and propose and begin preparations for the hosting of the Tribunal. We must ensure that once the special tribunal is formally established, courtrooms, offices, etc.. will be ready for use so that justice can be done,” said the leader of the party.

At the same time, she added that, most likely, a larger building would be needed to consider the Ukrainian issue than when considering the tribunals for Rwanda and Yugoslavia, since the array of Russian crimes in Ukraine is much larger.
