UN Secretary General Appoints New Black Sea Grain Initiative Coordinator

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Abdullah Abdul Samad Dashti of Kuwait as United Nations Coordinator for the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This was reported by the press service of the UN.

Dashti replaced Amir Mahmoud Abdullah of Sudan, who has been acting UN coordinator since August.. The Secretary General thanked Abdullah for his leadership, hard work and dedication to making the Initiative a reality during challenging times.

Dashti, who retired from the Kuwait Armed Forces with the rank of Vice Admiral in 2021, has 40 years of experience in naval operations, leadership and management both within Kuwait and in multinational operations..

From 2019 to 2020, he was Kuwait's Defense Attache in Belgium and Representative of the Kuwait Mission to NATO.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was established by Ukraine, Turkey, the Russian Federation and the UN on July 22 with the aim of resuming the export of grain from Ukraine, food and fertilizers, including ammonia, through a secure maritime humanitarian corridor. The first ship with Ukrainian food within the framework of the Initiative left the port of Odessa on August 1.
