The UN Human Rights Council, following a vote, approved the appointment of a special rapporteur to assess the observance of human rights in Russia. This is reported by the Russian media.

The UN noted that the Russian authorities are becoming increasingly tough.

“With this vote, Council members pledged their support to Russian citizens and civil society as they come under pressure from an increasingly brutal and totalitarian state,” said Phil Lynch, Executive Director of the International Human Rights Service..

He also stressed that at present there is a clear connection between repression measures within Russia and its aggression against Ukraine..

There is a clear link between domestic repression and international aggression. The criminalization of protest, the imprisonment of human rights activists, the suppression of the free press and the massive spread of disinformation are all factors that allowed Putin to start a war of aggression in Ukraine,” Phil Lynch added..

The Special Rapporteur will have to submit his report to the 54th session of the Human Rights Council and the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023-2024.

The appointment of the Special Rapporteur was supported by 17 countries, 24 abstained, and six voted against, namely Bolivia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and.
