The head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, threatens Moldova with war if Chisinau creates a threat to the Russian military in Transnistria, and also declares that the Russian Federation will “protect the Russian speakers”.
Speaking to students of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, he stated that.
“Moldova should understand that the creation of threats to the security of Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria will be considered as an attack on Russia,” he said during a speech to students of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
He also touched upon the topic of Moldova during his speech at the Russian marathon for children "
“We are closely monitoring the situation and will do everything so that the interests of the Russian-speaking, Russian population in Moldova do not suffer in any way,” the Russian Foreign Minister said..
Lavrov recalled that Moldova has the Transnistrian region, on the territory of which the unrecognized "
Given this, the minister publicly hinted to Moldova on the need for “correct” behavior, mentioning the “non-diplomatic way to solve the problem”. At the same time, he stated that “under the dictation of the US and the EU” Moldova does not want a direct dialogue.
Russian troops have been stationed in Transnistria since the early 90s after the region broke away from Moldova as a result of a serious conflict. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic is recognized by Russia, but not recognized by the international community. According to Russia, its military presence in Transnistria should ensure peace.
The Republic of Moldova, like Ukraine, which received the status of an EU candidate, demands the withdrawal of Russian troops.
Earlier it was reported that a group of Russian military from the unrecognized Transnistria was not allowed in Moldova.
