After hitting a record low in July, US President Joe Biden's approval rating rose six percentage points to 44%, the highest in a year.. While this rise is a significant improvement after Biden's several political successes, overall his ratings are still relatively low, with 53% of Americans disapproving of his work.. Gallup Poll Evidence.

Biden's job approval ratings are boosted in large part by independent political respondents, whose support rose from 31% last month to 40%.. Biden's ratings with Democrats (81%) and Republicans (4%) have not changed significantly over the same period..

These results were obtained from a Gallup poll from August 1 to 23, covering the eventful period of the Biden presidency.. While recovering from COVID-19, the president announced that the US had killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri. In the days that followed, Congressional Democrats passed a massive bill on domestic spending, lower inflation, health care, climate action and taxes..

While high inflation and recession fears continue to destabilize the US, there has been some positive economic news lately, with average gas prices falling below $4 a gallon, a more positive-than-expected jobs report and? slight decrease in inflation. The poll was completed just before Biden announced his plan to write off student loans that would cut the debt of millions of Americans..

Biden received the most praise for the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

Of the 11 questions, Biden received the highest rating for his management of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.. This is the only issue with majority support (58%), including 88% of Democrats, 58% of independents and 20% of Republicans.. Biden's environmental policy is 50% approved, the only other issue with a majority of independent respondents' approval.. Democrats' estimates for Biden's resolution of the remaining nine issues range from 63% to 78%..

41% to 46% of American adults approve of the president's handling of education, the situation in Ukraine, energy and foreign policy. Fewer, between 31% and 39% of Americans, approve of Biden's handling of relations with Russia, immigration, gun and abortion policy, and the economy, with his approval rating for economic policy being the lowest..

Gallup last measured Biden's approval ratings on six of these questions in March.. Since then, support for his response to the pandemic, environment and energy policy has risen by five points, while approval of economic policy has fallen by five points.. Biden's ratings on foreign policy and relations with Russia are statistically unchanged from their performance in March.

Historical Context of US Presidential Approval Ratings.

The latest improvement in Biden's overall approval rating puts him in a better position ahead of the midterm elections than five of his predecessors in the past 40 years have been — Ronald Reagan in 1982, Bill Clinton in 1994, George W. Bush in 2006, Barack Obama in 2014 and Donald.

However, Biden's August approval ratings are overshadowed by 61% to 75% for Reagan in 1986, George W. Bush in 1990, Clinton in 1998, and George W. Bush in 2002.. Obama's rating ahead of the August 2010 midterm elections matches Biden's current 44%.

Biden, whose approval ratings dipped until August, appears to be benefiting from recent victories as well as improved economic conditions.. An analysis of key figures from the Gallup election in June found that the political environment in the US was particularly unfavorable for Democrats..

Biden's approval remains below the 50% mark, which usually means a difficult midterm year for the incumbent's party.
