The Estonian government approved a decree restricting Russian citizens' ability to apply for a temporary residence permit or a visa to study in the country. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia..

Also, according to the document, Russians and Belarusians will be able to find a short-term job in the state only if they have a valid visa issued by Estonia.

The amendment to the sanctions clarified that citizens of the Russian Federation or Belarus will not be able to register short-term employment with a legal residence permit obtained in another EU country. Moreover, this change will prevent them from applying for a long-term visa for the purpose of short-term employment..

“With this amendment, we will eliminate scenarios where a request for a short-stay Schengen visa is submitted, for example, for tourism purposes, from another member state in order to circumvent existing sanctions,” explained Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu.

He noted that the Russian war against Ukraine not only grossly violates the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of our state, but also threatens the security of Estonia and the European Union..

“The maintenance of sanctions against Russia is necessary to ensure constant pressure on the country. If sanctions help stop Russian aggression, this will have a positive impact on our own security as well,” the minister stressed..

Earlier, the Estonian authorities did not allow tennis players from Russia and Belarus to compete in the country.
