Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country due to riots, the purpose of which is to change the current government. The politician used a military plane to escape and is in the Maldives. It is reported by the BBC.

On the evening of July 12, Rajapaksa arrived in the capital of the Maldives, Male.. Sri Lanka also left the President's brother Basil Rajapaksa, the country's former finance minister.. Reporters say he's heading to the US.

The flight of the President of Sri Lanka was the result of the economic collapse that befell the country in 2022. Interestingly, after Rajapaksa left his post, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should have temporarily taken his place. But he also does not enjoy popular popularity and refused to lead Sri Lanka.

During the riots, protesters set fire to his private residence.. Wickremesinghe announces his resignation.

Thus, now Sri Lanka is actually left without a functioning government.. The next acting president, according to local law, must hold a new election within 30 days.
