Sanctions imposed by Washington are forcing Russia to use computer chips from dishwashers and refrigerators in some military equipment, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said, writes The Washington Post..

“We have reports from Ukrainians that when they find Russian military equipment, it is filled with semiconductors that the Russian military took out of dishwashers and refrigerators,” Raimondo said, adding that she recently met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine.

U.S. technology exports to Russia have fallen nearly 70 percent since the sanctions were imposed in late February, according to Raimondo, whose department oversees export controls that make up the bulk of the sanctions package against Russia.. Another three dozen countries have adopted similar export bans, also affecting Belarus.

According to Raimondo, the approach was to not provide the Russian Federation with technology that it could use to continue the war..

The semiconductor story comes from Ukrainian officials who said they found parts of refrigerators, commercial and industrial equipment when they searched captured Russian tanks that likely make up for other unavailable components, Commerce Department spokeswoman Robin Patterson said..
