Switzerland is changing the system of accommodation for refugees from Ukraine - now they will not be able to choose where to live in the country, according to Swissinfo.

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM, a division of the Ministry of Justice and Police) stated that the goal is to accommodate registered Ukrainian refugees, taking into account the capabilities of the regions (cantons) based on the principle of proportionality.

As the publication explains, usually the federal center first places refugees in federal centers for the reception and accommodation of migrants, and then distributes them to the cantons..

However, in the situation of the current force majeure, such a system is experiencing an increased load, and in fact, it has stopped working..

According to SEM representative David Keller, Zurich, Basel and Bern, as well as the canton of Ticino, are experiencing difficulties in distributing the growing number of refugees..

Refugees prefer to settle in the most popular and developed regions. Now this practice will end..

Refugees and the Swiss families who host them will no longer be able to make their own decisions about the resettlement of people seeking protection from war.

However, as noted, families and established groups of refugees will be able to stay together.. But all the rest will be resettled around the country on the basis of decisions of the authorities, and not in accordance with their wishes..

If one of the refugees wants to change the canton, then the cantonal authority must give consent to this, taking into account the principle of proportionality.

Since the beginning of the war, about 37,000 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Switzerland. About half of them were placed in private households with the support of non-governmental organizations and individual citizens.

All Ukrainian refugees, with the exception of a few people, have already acquired a special migration status (residence permit category S), which allows them to look for work and enroll in language courses.
