Latvia and two other Baltic countries may ban Russian ships from entering their ports. The relevant decision is already being prepared by the government. This was stated by the Minister of Transport of Latvia Talis Linkaits on TV3.

According to the minister, even despite the sanctions against Russian and Belarusian companies, now the movement of goods is taking place, and therefore this does not affect the work of the ports..

According to Linkaits, the most pessimistic scenarios suggest that the drop in cargo in the port of Ventspils could be about two-thirds, in Riga - about 45%, and in Liepaja - from 20 to 30%.

The Latvian Transport Ministry has urged port authorities not to let Russian-flagged vessels into the ports, but, according to Linkaits, the ports do not heed such calls..

“Ships flying the Russian flag still call at Latvian ports, which, in my opinion, is unacceptable, so we are preparing appropriate decisions in the government,” he said..

“We hoped that there would be a common decision of the European Union.

We see that there are countries that are strongly against this, so obviously the decision will be regional,” added Linkaits..

Earlier it was also reported that the governments of the European Union countries will consider imposing an oil embargo on Russia due to its attack on Ukraine.. The Baltic countries insist on the embargo, and the main opponent is Germany, which is more dependent on Russian energy than other European countries.
