Bucharest has not addressed anyone with such a request.

From January 1, Helsinki is ready to assume a six-month presidency in the Council of the European Union instead of Romania. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipila to the Finnish news agency STT, reports EUobserver.

It is noted that Bucharest has not yet addressed such a request.

Romanian President Klaus Johannis announced on November 12 that his country is not ready to chair the Council of the European Union. He said he considered Prime Minister Viorica Denchile’s Social Democratic government incompetent and called for her resignation.. The very same Denchile told reporters that Romania is ready for the presidency.

MEP Viorica Denchile became the head of the Romanian government in January.

On January 15, the previous Prime Minister of Romania, Mihai Tudos, resigned almost seven months after taking office.. The reason for this was the difficult relationship of the head of government with the leadership of his native party.. On the same day, the politician submitted a letter of resignation to President Klaus Johannis..

On January 1, 2019, the half-year EU presidency should move from Austria to Romania.
