Fuego volcano in Guatemala erupted 20 hours. This is one of the three active volcanoes of a small Latin American country, but, perhaps, the most active. This eruption - the second this year, but perhaps the most powerful in the past 40 years.
When the eruption began, the authorities of Guatemala appealed to the inhabitants of several provinces to close the wells and hide in houses. Lava flooded the rivers through the streets of settlements, no less terrible were pyroclastic flows of volcanic gas, stones and ash, whose speed can reach 700 km / h, and a temperature of -800 ° C. Ashes reached the capital of the country, located only 40 kilometers from the foot of the volcano. The international airport has stopped working, because the ashes from the vole of the volcano contain particles of volcanic glass, which quickly destroy any engine. And there, where the streams of fire flowed through the streets, people burst from the heat from the skin. Even two days after the eruption on hot earth, it was impossible to walk. The rescue operation involved the army and the police. They were helped by volunteers. The work of rescuers was complicated by volcanic dust and smog.
The village of El Rodeo, which is only 12 kilometers from the crater of the volcano, suffered more than others. The houses of the inhabitants were swept away by a stream of ash, stones and hot gases, the roads are blurred. The more surprising was the find made in one of the affected villages: in the basement of the house, covered with a thick layer of ash was found wrapped in a blanket girl at the age of several months, completely unscathed and alive. No one else was found alive in the village. Lava cut the way to save many. Many people suffered in the popular resort of Antigua. The number of deaths increases from day to day.
As of June 7, there are 99 dead. Hundreds of people received burns, damage to the airways with volcanic gases. The closest hospitals are overcrowded. The list of the dead is gradually replenished by those who were listed as hundreds of missing people. One way or another, about 2 million people were affected by the volcano.
