The European Union said that regional elections in the territory of the Crimean peninsula are illegitimate, and, accordingly, does not recognize the election of the governor of Sevastopol. The relevant communique is available on the EU website. "The European Union has not recognized the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore does not recognize the holding of elections on the Crimean peninsula. Anyone chosen on the Crimean peninsula, pretending to "represent" the Crimea and Sevastopol, will not be recognized as representatives of those territories that are Ukrainian, "the statement stresses. The European Union noted that "it remains unshakable in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine". Earlier it was reported that on a single day of voting, on September 10, the acting governor of Sevastopol, Dmitry Ovsyannikov, representing United Russia, scored 71.05 percent of the vote.
Direct elections of the head of the city were held for the first time. Crimea and Sevastopol have become part of Russia after the March 2014 referendum. During the voting, the majority of the inhabitants of the peninsula supported this decision. Kiev declined to recognize the results of the plebiscite. Moscow indicates that the procedure was in accordance with the norms of international law.
