The Conservative Party of Great Britain has lost the absolute parliamentary majority necessary for independent formation of the government. These are preliminary results of early elections, BBC News reports.. At the same time, the opposition Labor Party increased the number of its representatives in the parliament. As BBC News points out, this result can be regarded as the humiliation of Prime Minister Theresa May, who announced early elections in order to strengthen the position of the Conservatives during the Brexit period (Britain's withdrawal from the EU). Labor leader Jeremy Corbin has already called on May to resign. However, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers in a special statement stressed that she will remain in office for the sake of stability in the country. May, who was the initiator of the early elections, explained her idea with the desire to stop opposing opposition parties from Brexit's procedure.
On March 28, May signed a letter with notification to the authorities of the European Union about the formal launch of the Brexit procedure - withdrawal from the EU. Negotiations on the terms of Brexit will take two years. The decision to withdraw Britain from the European Union was adopted at a referendum on June 23, 2016. The refusal to join the EU was supported by more than half of those who voted.
The Conservatives lost the absolute majority in the British Parliament.
