On Thursday, May 26, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca was detained on charges of corruption crimes.

As Radio Liberty reports, on Thursday evening, he was taken out of the office by members of the National Center for Combating Corruption.

Before the detention for several hours in the office of the mayor were searched.

During the detention, the mayor's office was cordoned off by the police.

According to the National Center for Combating Corruption (NPPM), the Mayor of Chisinau is accused of corruption, abuse of office, gaining benefits from influence. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Dorin Chirtoaca is 38 years old. He heads the mayor's office of Chisinau for the third consecutive term, since 2007.



Earlier, two vice-mayors, the head of the transport department of Chisinau, as well as the Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure. All of them are members of the Liberal Party.

On Thursday, in the same cases, the secretary of the municipal council of Chisinau Valery Didenko, the municipal councilors Oleg Onischenko and Gennady Dumansky, as well as six businessmen.
