Turkish citizen Alparslan Celik, who claimed responsibility for the murder of Russian pilot Oleg Peshkov, was sentenced to five years in prison in Turkey for illegal possession of arms.
This is reported by RIA Novosti.
On November 24, 2015, the Turkish Air Force shot down the Russian Su-24 bomber involved in the operation in Syria. Pilot Oleg Peshkov and navigator Konstantin Murakhtin catapulted. Murakhtin managed to escape, and Peshkov was shot from the ground by militants, when he was in the air over the territory of residence of Syrian Turkmen.
Chelik immediately after the incident took responsibility for the death of the pilot. At the same time, during the investigation, he stated that he did not kill the pilot and ordered the subordinate militants not to shoot at Peshkov.
After this, relations between Moscow and Ankara deteriorated sharply.
The Turkish authorities claimed that they did not know about the nationality of the downed aircraft, which, according to Ankara, had invaded the airspace of the country. Russia imposed sanctions against the country, in particular, banning the import of a number of food products and canceling charter flights.
In late June, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized for the destruction of the Russian aircraft, after which relations between Moscow and Ankara gradually began to normalize.
