German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed Germany's intention to increase its defense spending in accordance with NATO requirements. Such a statement by Merkel was a response to the evasive stance on financial obligations to NATO of the Social Democrat leader Martin Schultz, writes Politico.

Merkel also noted that such an undertaking was assumed by the entire government, which includes the Social Democrats themselves. The issue of defense spending is one of the fundamental differences between the CDU and the PSD before the autumn elections to the Bundestag.

Earlier about the increase in defense spending was said in the Conservative Party of Britain, which is preparing for elections in June. Theresa May also emphasizes the increase in defense and security costs.
