Yesterday at 8 pm on the streets of Israel the sirens sounded. Unusual. No ambulance and no police. Probably, these were air-raid sirens. I did not immediately realize what it meant. I understood, only when I saw people standing on the street. Day of Remembrance. Thus began the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen in the Wars of Israel and the Victims of Terror. Day, always preceding Israel's Independence Day. Very Strong Custom. And very specific. Remember everyone.
From Wikipedia: "In 2016, Israel commemorates 23,447 IDF soldiers, police officers, border guards, general security services, foreign intelligence services, prison administrations, fire brigades and activists of Jewish underground organizations in Mandated Palestine. Over the past year to the sorrowful list was added 68 names. As of 2016, there are 9442 parents living in Israel who have lost their children; 4,917 widows of servicemen; 1948 orphans who lost their father or mother [1].
On the same day in Israel, 2 493 victims of terrorist acts are commemorated (as of 2013). For 2012/13, 16 names have been added to this mourning list [2]. The death toll has been counted since 1860, which is considered the beginning of the struggle of Jews for the Land of Israel. [3] The total number of deaths includes military, police, general security (Shabak) and foreign intelligence ("Mossad") employees, staff of the Prison Administration, as well as fighters of the Jewish Brigade who fought in World War II and fighters of Jewish underground organizations operating In Palestine before the establishment of the state.
Maybe we should also establish such a custom. And just remember all those who died for Independence of Ukraine. And also the parents of the deceased, widows and orphans. At least the exact number of them. Increasing almost every day. Already familiar. How mournful impersonation.
