On April 30 in Minsk, the leader of the Belarusian opposition Nikolai Statkevich was arrested on the eve of new planned anti-government protests.

This Radio Liberty was informed by the wife of the politician Marina.

According to her, the siloviki informed her the day before that Statkevich had been arrested for a period of five days.

However, the reasons for the arrest of the opposition's wife were not disclosed.

As noted, a wave of anti-government protests swept Belarus this year, and on May 1, opponents of President Alexander Lukashenko are planning a new action in Minsk.

Statkevich was Lukashenka's rival in the 2010 elections.

The election results, according to critics of the Belarusian regime, were falsified. After those elections and participation in protests, Statkevich spent five years behind bars.

In March, Statkevich stated that he was briefly detained before the annual action in honor of Freedom Day, which was dispersed by the police.

As reported by the "Observer", March 25 on the Day of Will in Belarus, there were massive detentions, as well as dispersal of rallies.
