In Yemen, as well as in three countries in Africa - Nigeria, Somalia and Southern Sudan, 20 million people may starve to death in the next six months, provided that they do not take urgent measures to prevent this humanitarian disaster, the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO) Jose Graziano da Silva at the 165th session of this UN sub-division.

"Hunger does not just kill, it leads to social instability, and also plunges people into a vicious cycle of poverty and dependency on external assistance that persists for decades," said Jose Graziano da Silva, according to the UN News Center,.

The 20 million people in question are on the verge of starvation due to droughts and conflicts in their countries.

So, famine has already become a reality in some parts of Southern Sudan.

Da Silva told FAO Council members that during the week-long session he would provide them with information on the extent of food crises in each individual country and proposed a package of measures needed to prevent a catastrophe.

Earlier in the UN, in connection with the situation in Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia and Southern Sudan, they announced the largest humanitarian crisis in the world since the foundation of the United Nations in 1945.
