Bulgaria intends to make territorial claims to Ukraine. In particular, the leader of the Bulgarian Revival party, Kostadin Kostadinov, noted that Bulgarians make up the majority of the population of Southern Bessarabia, and therefore “there is nothing more logical than returning the region back to Bulgaria.”.
According to the politician, Bulgarians have been the indigenous population of this region since the 6th century and now make up the majority of those living in this territory. He noted that Ukraine has owned Southern Bessarabia for only 34 years, so there is nothing more logical than “the return of Southern Bessarabia back to Bulgaria.”.
“Ukraine is disintegrating, and at a future peace congress, which will decide the fate of the so-called Ukrainian statehood, which did not take place, Bulgaria must declare its claims to Bulgarian Bessarabia,” added Kostadin Kostadinov.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Bulgaria responded to the statement. They appealed to the leadership of the Republic of Bulgaria to condemn the statements of the politician, “who incites the destruction of international law, distorts historical facts and encourages the redivision of borders in Europe.”.
“The statements of the leader of the Revival party regarding territorial encroachments on Ukraine are unacceptable for a politician of an EU member state, and confirm his systematic promotion of the Kremlin’s narratives,” the department added.
Southern Bessarabia is an area that occupied the southern and eastern parts of the historical-geographical region of Budjak in the southern part of Bessarabia. Now part of the territory belongs to Ukraine, in particular the cities of Bolgrad and Izmail.
In total, about 25 thousand Bulgarians arrived in Bessarabia since the beginning of the 19th century.. At the same time, according to official data, since the beginning of the 19th century, the city of Bolgrad nine times passed from the jurisdiction of one state to the jurisdiction of another state, but during this time it was never under the rule of Sofia.
As for Izmail, in particular, in the early 2000s there were 84.8 thousand in the city. residents. Among them, Ukrainians were 38%, and Bulgarians - 10%.
This nationalist political party in Bulgaria was founded by Kostadin Kostadinov in 2014. She entered parliament in 2022 with 10.2%.
The party is known for its pro-Russian position. In particular, in 2023, more than 120 well-known Bulgarian public figures signed the appeal of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee to Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov.
In it, they called for the dissolution of the pro-Russian “Renaissance”, which recently from the rostrum of parliament and during its public events incites hatred in society, encourages discrimination, and threatens its political opponents with violence. Such quotes from public speeches of the chairman and its members are intended to “destroy the democratic rule of law”.
