Peru's new president, Manuel Merino, says he will step down five days after his appointment. His performance was broadcast on RPP radio.
He noted that he made this decision against the background of the protests taking place in the country and their harsh dispersal, during which two people died and another 63 were hospitalized..
“I would like to inform you that I am announcing my resignation from the post of President of the Republic,” said Merino.
Earlier, the country's Congress voted to resign President Martin Wizcarra, who was accused of bribery as governor of the Mokegua region in 2011-2014. His place was taken by the speaker of the congress Manuel Merino, which provoked a wave of protests in Peru.
