" Realities.

These words are an accurate and clear explanation of why Ukraine needed to join NATO. If the country were among the members of the alliance, I’m sure that there would be no annexation of Crimea and an undeclared war in the Donbass. Thousands of people would survive and not lose their housing, work, life prospects. It is amazing, however, not at all that Ukraine could not understand this.. It is surprising that the Ukrainians never understood: this is well understood in Russia.

That is why, since the beginning of the 90s, the Kremlin has insisted on maintaining the basing of the Black Sea Fleet in Ukrainian Sevastopol. Not because of some notorious " And it’s not at all because Sevastopol is a “city of Russian glory”, Sevastopol itself, together with its residents, was of last interest to Moscow.

And because the preservation of the Russian military base on Ukrainian soil opened up opportunities for the subsequent occupation of Crimea and hindered European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine. Russia was constantly looking for opportunities to put Ukraine on the chain, not give it a chance to move independently.

After the Black Sea Fleet there was cheap gas. After cheap gas - attempts to force entry into the Common Economic Space. After the Common Economic Space - Kharkov Agreements. After the Kharkov agreements - the failure of the decision to sign an association agreement with the EU. Well, then there was annexation and war.

And at the same time, all these years, Moscow, through all its channels, tried to convince politicians and military personnel in the West that as soon as Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, a military conflict will immediately begin.

And really convinced many. And even the fact that Russia attacked the country, which in 2014 agreed with all its “Wishlist” and declared its non-alignedness, convinced few people - both among Western politicians themselves and among opponents of Euro-Atlantic integration in Ukraine itself.

Therefore, Ukraine remains outside the walls of the alliance. So far, only without Crimea and Donbass.
