The US Navy on Friday, August 24, officially resumed the naval command of the Cold War era in the Atlantic. This decision was made because of the surge in activity of Russian submarines in the Atlantic region, reports the Left Bank, citing Politico.

The second fleet in Norfolk, Virginia, which was disbanded in 2011, will again be supplied with ships, aircraft and amphibious assault forces for potential operations along the east coast and in the North Atlantic.

"Our control over the sea and the expansion of our military presence, two vital elements of our national security, are under threat from the resurgent foreign powers, namely, Russia and China," said one of the higher naval officers during the solemn events on the occasion of the opening of the fleet, Commander Admiral Chris Grady.

The head of the Naval Operations Department, Admiral John Richardson, who earlier this year issued an order to restore the 2nd fleet, stressed that the fleet is not "looking for a fight". But he noted that the realities require that he support a "large-scale oceanic maneuver war" in the Atlantic region.

The second navy of the US Navy existed in 1950-2011 and was responsible for the Atlantic Ocean from the North Pole to the Caribbean Sea.

It was disbanded in the fall of 2011 due to the restructuring of the US Navy, as well as for financial reasons. A number of organizational issues related to the activities of the fleet have not yet been clarified. In particular, the strength of the staff and who will enter its command is still unclear.

The second fleet managed to take part in the Cuban crisis (the ships of this union organized the blockade of the island), the invasion of Grenada and the tracking of the actions of the Soviet fleet in the North Atlantic. However, in January 2011, the Pentagon decided to reduce the Second Fleet for the redistribution of resources in the interests of other operational connections. At the time of the disbandment, the fleet included more than 100 ships and submarines.

The US Navy consists of operational fleets, each with its own area of ??

responsibility. The maximum number of fleets operated by the Pentagon was achieved after the end of World War II, in 1946 - then the structure of the US Navy had 12 fleets. By the beginning of the XXI century, six fleets remained, from the Second to the Seventh (the First Fleet was disbanded in 1973). The Fifth Fleet, with the Persian Gulf included in the zone of responsibility, took the most active part in the hostilities of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
