As Trump himself said, they had previously spoken on the phone, but they held a personal meeting for the first time. The way it was held was covered by more than five thousand journalists from all over the world. In fact, the summit turned into a grandiose political reality show with Kim and Trump in the lead roles. Kim, not accustomed to the attention of thousands of completely independent reporters, was visibly nervous on the public. But Trump was like a fish in the water. Since he worked for a long time as a TV presenter, for him this format was just perfect, writes the correspondent of NV Ivan Yakovyna.
Journalists even caught the moment when the American president, speaking to Kim alone, with delight in his voice, said that from the outside it's all like a scene from a fantastic movie! In general, for Trump show - this is the main thing, and he received it in full. The whole world followed the summit without exaggeration.
But the content of the signed document personally raises questions for me. It consists of four points, but only the third is of real importance, which speaks about the commitment of the DPRK to work towards the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. What is "in the direction" - no one knows for sure.
At the same time, there is mentioned a reference to the Panmunjom Declaration, signed by North and South Korea in the spring. And here is the important point. This declaration says that the denuclearized status of the Korean peninsula should be achieved through "full denuclearization". From the context it follows that we are talking about the nuclear disarmament of both Koreas. But South Korea does not have nuclear weapons. Accordingly, we must understand, we mean Americans. But they are definitely not going to abandon their nuclear arsenal.
In general, all disputes now revolve around the interpretation of the concepts of "denuclearization" and "full denuclearization", which are often mentioned in the spring declaration with an unpronounceable title, and in the Singapore agreement. Americans (and with them almost the rest of the world) believe that denuclearization is the denial of North Korea from nuclear weapons and production facilities. "Full denuclearization" is, in general, the same thing, only with frowning eyebrows.
But North Korea itself has a slightly different linguistics. Denuclearization for the DPRK is not only its own renunciation of nuclear missiles, but also the breaking of the agreement on joint defense between the United States and South Korea.
This treaty allows the US to keep its military bases in the south of the peninsula, and (which is important) guarantees to South Korea an American "nuclear umbrella". The refusal of Seoul from this "umbrella" in Pyongyang is considered an equally important part of the denuclearization, as well as its own renunciation of the atomic bomb. For the United States, the break of this treaty is absolutely, absolutely unacceptable. Now, at least.
Even more interesting is the North Korean understanding of "complete denuclearization". For them, this means global nuclear disarmament. The logic they have is this: "complete - it means complete". Of course, to wait for this in our life, it makes no sense. Maybe in the distant future the world will agree on the renunciation of atomic weapons, but certainly not now.
Be that as it may, one must understand: the same documents in Washington and Pyongyang are now read in completely different ways. In an amicable way, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-no needed to first agree on terminology, and then already sign documents. For now appeared an incredibly wide field for interpretation and the spring inter-Korean declaration, and the recently signed joint statement of Trump and Kim. I will not be at all surprised if very soon they begin to accuse each other of renouncing the principles of the Singapore document.
For now, the world has become the owner of a short declaration of intent, written in a very vague language and open to interpretations from all sides. Someone may say that "it's a dashing misfortune", that everything will be much better and the world will reign in the Far East. May be! Who knows?.
But to me such an outcome seems really fantastic, as Trump correctly noted. The US will never tear up its defense treaty with South Korea. This treaty has already become one of the main pillars of the American system of global security. He gives the US the only major springboard in East Asia. Right next to China's rapidly gaining strength.
The abrogation of such a treaty is almost like the dissolution of NATO in the flourishing of the might of the Soviet Union. Of Trump, of course, anyone can expect, but it would be wildness even for him. Accordingly, there will not be a denuclearization in the North Korean sense of the word.
And if so, then Kim Jong-un is not going to disarm. The examples of Libya and Ukraine perfectly demonstrate what happens to those who voluntarily renounce nuclear weapons. At the same time, it must be remembered that both of these countries gave the West security guarantees. Where are these guarantees now? About them, even indecently.
In addition, Trump himself, through the example of the Treaty on Trans-Pacific Cooperation, the Iranian Nuclear Transaction, the Paris Agreement on Climate, the Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, has shown that he is not going to comply with any international agreements. I think he tears them up much more often than concludes.
Under these conditions, Kim would be a complete idiot, agreeing to unilateral nuclear disarmament. And he is not an idiot at all. Most likely, the North Korean dictator will now quietly improve his nuclear arsenal. His scientists will increase the range of missiles and the power of thermonuclear warheads. Just in case, so to speak.
At the same time Kim loudly, with a large confluence of journalists, will carry down any sheds, where allegedly were nuclear research. His sappers will dig at night, and in the afternoon they will artfully blow up tunnels in which (like) one can test an atomic bomb.
Well, the dictator himself will refuse military parades and personally open in Pyongyang "Burger King" or "McDonald's". The point is simple: to show that the DPRK has become a much more open and less aggressive country.
I think after this, adorable Burgers burgers and sanctions will be lifted, and money will help, and North Korea's best friend will. I am almost sure that North Korea will never be nuclear disarmed - whatever they write in the relevant documents, this country will remain with its bombs and missiles.
But under the influence of this diplomatic and political game one more interesting process may begin: the DPRK can follow the Chinese way. China 40 years ago was the poorest, backward, wild and insane country with a nuclear bomb, which everyone was afraid and did not understand. But when it opened to the world a little, reform came immediately, business revived, science was born anew, and the people became rich. Now China is the second economy of our planet.
In communist Vietnam everything was almost the same. In the 1960s, they fought fiercely with the United States, and now they are friends and trade. In this case, both in China and Vietnam, the same people remained in power as they were. If now everything will be so, then for peace on the Korean peninsula, you do not have to worry. But if someone decides to take Pyongyang's nuclear toys by force, then everything will be very, very bad. We hope for the first.
